Ok, so it sounds like a slang term for a post-Super Bowl blowout. Or a space lab, Wii game, or even a new MTV semi-reality show. Truth is, SPAB is so esoteric, you cant even Google it. So what really is SPAB, why is it a big deal, and how did I get spabbed?
The Standards Publication Advisory Board, sponsored by IHS, meets annually to give standard developing organizations a forum to discuss the ever-quickening and now electronic pace of publishing standards. This year's conference, January 27-30 in Fort Lauderdale, gave attendees an opportunity to "Go for the Gold with Standards."
Were talking the world of standards. ANSI, ASME, ASTM, BSI, CSA, IEEE, ISO, NFPA, SAE, ULif you can come up with acronym associated with an SDO, you can bet that a representative was there. We came from the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Kuwait, Russia, Korea, and Japan. I can already picture interstellar standards.
This was much more than alphabet soup, though. We explored the integrated functions of environment, security, and energy; globalization; translations; piracy, counterfeits, and copyright infringement; packaged subscriptions and digital libraries; portals; brain drain; personnel certification versus privacy; and standardsdid I mention standards? Standards covering aerospace, automobiles, electricity and electronics, petroleum, safety, and valves. Even standards-to-go.
Spabbed. This attendee came away with more than a few thoughts. Specific SPABlets to follow. Watch for them here.
