In a Reuters article this week, CPSC head Nancy Nord warned Americans attending the Olympic games not to buy cheap or counterfeit goods.  In addition to cautioning Americans to “shop smartly,” Nord stated that customs officials would be stepping up their fight against counterfeit products during the games. According to the article, the World Customs Organization warned in January that fans caught with counterfeit products on their return from China could face heavy fines and possibly prison. “I can’t go into the details of any operations but our agency will be working very hard with U.S.customs in the run-up to and during as part of our new imports surveillance system,” Nord said. “We are not just putting more people on the ports and airports but we are developing new techniques and technologies all the time to make sure imports or purchases by individuals meet our own safety standard.”
