Xcel Energy announced the development of the first Smart Grid City in Boulder Colorado. According to Xcel Energy's press release, Xcel Will be spending $100 million to develop the Smart Grid City. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) commends Xcel for investing in the future and pursuing Smart Grid technologies. For those new to the terminology, Smart Grid is basically the national electric grid with monitoring, communications, intelligence and control capabilities integrated into the grid. While the Xcel project focuses on the electrical distribution system from the utility to the home, NEMA makes it clear that Smart Grid includes the entire electric grid from the power plant to the residential, commercial or industrial end device.
