I know folks employed in many industries have jobs that require very special skill sets — but after watching this video of electrical power line maintenance workers in action, it gives one newfound respect for the high degree of skill and knowledge necessary to keep electricity flowing across our country. (For anyone who ever sat through a physics class wondering how such information could ever be useful, think how much this guy appreciates the ingenious application of a "Faraday cage.")

Not that I want to see these extraordinary technicians out of work … but common sense tells us this is yet another reason to create "smarter" electrical distribution systems.  Smart Grid will allow us to detect and fix problems in the grid without risking a worker's life.
