So I was walking from the Metro to NEMA's headquarters in Rosslyn, Va this morning and low and behold I see it. Yes, the world now has solar powered trash cans! Apparently these have been around a few years, Philadelphia in particular, but they are new to DC. It looks like any modern plastic trash can from a distance, but when I honed in on it I immediately did a double take. Rosslyn has implemented an initiative of solar powered trash cans that use sunlight to compact trash for optimal space efficiency. I'm not sure how many man hours or dollars this will save the city, but it must be a considerable help (and not to mention real good PR). So if you are in Rosslyn and you need to dispose of your waste, do so in this ever so futuristic invention!
