With little happening in Congress as the midterm elections loom large, our nation’s effort to modernize the electrical grid, create jobs by installing new technologies, and connect renewable generation to population centers is in jeopardy of stalling due to the lack of new electrical transmission siting.   Transmission lines are the lynch-pin that connects electricity from generation sites to our homes and businesses that use electricity.  But without a national transmission siting policy, our ability to plan, permit, and pay for new transmission lines won’t happen.   To highlight the problems with the current process, NEMA has issued “Siting Transmission Corridors" and distributed to every member of Congress.    Improvements to streamline the current process are contained in legislation pending in Congress (S. 1462), so let’s keep the pressure on our legislators to do the right thing and reform our transmission siting process.     Our energy future depends on it.
