Late Friday, June 20th, Geneva based International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) announced the immediate re-admission of the IEC National Committee of Iran as IEC’s 83rd member. In its pronouncement, the IEC stated that the re-admission was made possible by the payment of Iran’s outstanding annual membership dues.
It remains uncertain if the re-admission applies to IEC’s Conformity Assessment Activity. The announcement of the initial suspension of Iran was followed by a strongly worded cautionary statement that was issued to all IEC member bodies participating in its Conformity Assessments Systems. The statement from IEC’s General Secretary, F.W.P. Vreeswijk, warned its members that it does not track sanctions imposed by the United Nations on any country, or by one country on another. This is the responsibility of those doing business in sanctioned countries.
