Do the light switch. . .

South Carolina’s electrical co-ops have launched a campaign to place about 7 million CFLs throughout the homes of co-op members over the next ten years. Beginning this week, the co-ops will send each consumer-member two free CFLs. The 20 participating co-ops expect to distribute about 1.2 million CFLs this year.  The CFL distribution is part of a set of initiatives designed to save energy. PTA Fundraiser Idea!

The Washington Post reported recently that two local Virginia counties are using compact fluorescent lamps to raise money for their schools. As part of their spring fund-raising effort, Arlington and Fairfax County school children will be going door-to-door hawking the new bulbs. The fundraiser, which begins on April 22, Earth Day, has a sales goal of one light bulb per public school student, or about 186,000 CFLs. Revolutionary Old North Church

AP reported last week that Old North Church, of Paul Revere fame, has continued its “revolutionary” ways by installing Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to illuminate its ceiling vaults. This follows the installation of compact fluorescent lamps in the “one if by land, two if by sea” lanterns in the steeple two years ago.  The 18 strips of LEDs are installed in the crown moldings, shining up into the vaulted ceiling, highlighting its arches, while remaining hidden from sight.
