European Union points to China as source of Counterfeit Goods

At a Global Anti-Counterfeit Summit in Brussels this past week, China once again became the object of attention. Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Union, announced that EU officials had seized more than 128 million counterfeit and pirated goods in 2006, up 70 percent from 2005. However, in spite of new EU regulations and increased cooperation with other nations in fighting counterfeit products, Barrosso noted that the “elephant in the room” is still China. “Unless we successfully engage China, then everything else we do is a mere side show,” Barroso stated at a press conference after his keynote address. President Barroso also pointed to consumers and said that without demand for counterfeit products, many of these fake goods would disappear. He emphasized how important consumer education is in combating the rise of counterfeit products.
