Recent article suggests motor industry needs to start paying attention to nanotechnology
The work and
findings described in this March
10 article suggest to me that NEMA
members who manufacture motors should start watching developments in
nanotechnology if they haven't already. The
article reports that "brush contacts made of carbon nanotubes had 10
times less resistance than did the carbon-copper composite brushes commonly used
today." That could lead to major
improvements in efficiency and cooler operations.
Once these
nano-enabled type contactors are
commercially viable, the motor
industry needs to work with the IEC TC 113 TAG to
standardize the methods by which their electrical properties, and their reliability and durability are
assessed.
