Lighting Technologies Coming Full Circle
I came across a recent article reporting on a University of Rochester discovery of a laser-based manufacturing process that makes regular 60-watt incandescent light bulbs into nanotechnology-enabled ones as bright as a 100-watt bulb, capable of emitting a whiter light, and using no more energy to do so.
I for one think it's a good thing that lighting technology can come full circle, starting from the traditional incandescent bulb, to CFL's, halogens and LED's, then finally back to better incandescents. Now, bulbs with this gain in performance output may still fall short of the energy savings necessary to comply with EISA 2007 requirements that must be met by 2014, but the improved performance and the method used to achieve it show promise for future improvements in the lighting industry.
