A Thrilling Summer Blockbuster...
The biggest blockbuster this summer isn't showing at your local multiplex; it is playing out right in the nation's capital.
"Year One" of the Obama Administration and a robust Democratic-controlled Congress has everything one could wish for -- drama, humor, nail-biting moments. Perhaps this year more than any other, Congress is pushing forward with an ambitious agenda. Congressional Quarterly Today ("An Ambitious Summer on the Hill," July 6, 2009) put it this way: "Democrats are excited about the prospect of participating in a historic session that many hope will be remembered alongside the New Deal and the Great Society." Just a few things on Congress' "to do" list:
- comprehensive energy and climate change legislation
- overhaul of the nation's health care system
- passage of the annual appropriations bills
- confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor
- possible reform of immigration laws
Of course, success will be determined by whether the majority can avoid making "Public Enemies" and hold together the coalitions necessary to advance these goals. If they can get through the next 4-5 weeks of partisan wrangling and tough negotiating without getting "The Hangover" of their lives, it will be downright amazing.
