Social Media and Product Safety

This fall, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) launched "CPSC 2.0," a comprehensive social networking initiative designed to harness the phenomena of social media to provide consumers with important product and life safety information.  According to CPSC Chairman Inez Moore Tenenbaum, "Through social media, CPSC can directly reach millions of the moms, dads and others who need our safety information the most."

Consumers can find information on product and life safety on the CPSC's "OnSafety" blog, which also has a "Recall Widget" tool that anyone (or any company) can easily add to their websites. The CPSC also has established a YouTube channel, Twitter page, and FlickR site to provide information to consumers.

"CPSC 2.0" is only part of the CPSC's ongoing efforts to improve product safety.  In 2010, the CPSC will build on the social media initiative and begin work on the creation of a Consumer Product Safety Incident Database that will be publicly available and searchable.
