Power Blackouts Increasing in the US & Smart Grid

The power grids in the Northeast section of the United States had 147 minutes of non-disaster power outages last year and the South Atlantic section had 143 minutes last year according to a CNN report.  This figure moves up yearly as the electrical distribution system continues to age with very little change over the past 50 years.  “During the past 2 decades, such blackouts have increased 124 percent – up from 41 blackouts between 1991 and 1995, to 92 between 2001 and 2005 according to research at the University of Minnesota.”  In the most recent analyzed data available, utilities reported 36 non-disaster outages in 2006 and the data for past few years is not available.  Can Smart Grid help?  Check out the NEMA Smart Grid webpage for more information.
