Existing Building Stock Presents Retrofit Opportunity

Existing Building Stock Presents Retrofit Opportunity

Today, energy efficient standards for new commercial building construction are being integrated on the systems level into High Performance Buildings (HPBs) to create spaces that optimize energy efficiency and create high-occupant-productivity.  I don’t know about you readers out there, but I’d have to agree with NEMA’s Director of HPBs; when I hear people talking about “net-zero” buildings and “BIM” (Building Information Modeling), I get goose bumps.  Read more [...]
Illumination Innovation

Illumination Innovation

Starting June 28, Washington, DC has become a brighter place thanks to the Department of Energy’s (DOE) GATEWAY Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Technology Demonstration program. Partnering with the Department of Labor (DOL), the two cabinets demonstrated the federal government’s commitment to energy conservation and management by retrofitting the Frances Perkins Building parking garage with 19 LED lamps. The goal of the demonstration center was to showcase real-world installations of LED systems Read more [...]
Net-Zero Energy Buildings take the Fiction out of Science Fiction

Net-Zero Energy Buildings take the Fiction out of Science Fiction

Even with all the advances of high performance buildings, I still find the concept of net-zero energy buildings (NZEB) shocking and fascinating. The technology is here (thanks in part to NEMA member products), and it feels like a realization of the futuristic buildings in science fiction movies. A few recent and upcoming NZEB projects that caught my eye: Groundbreaking recently started on Texas’s Lady Bird Johnson Middle School, which aims to be the largest net-zero public school in the Read more [...]
Smart Receptacle’s time has come

Smart Receptacle’s time has come

The High Performance Building is coming along quite well technologically.  New ideas and products show up like mushrooms after the rain.  One product area where we’ll definitively see improvements is the good old receptacle and its matching plug.  In addition to already familiar functions like GFCIs for personal protection we’ve seen recently product proposals offering several additional benefits: Safety Thermal detection would turn off the current when the wire Read more [...]
NEMA Addresses SSL Dimming Challenges

NEMA Addresses SSL Dimming Challenges

The NEMA Lighting Controls and Solid State Lighting Sections have co-produced a white paper on the subject of dimming screw-base integrated ballast LED lamps. It is designated LSD-49 and is titled "Solid State Lighting for Incandescent Replacement—Best Practices for Dimming". NEMA and the SSL industry hope that by issuing guidance as early as possible on this subject, SSL technology can avoid the pitfalls associated with less than compatible self-ballasted CFL and Dimmer combinations. Read more [...]
Low Hanging Sustainability Fruit: Energy Efficiency

Low Hanging Sustainability Fruit: Energy Efficiency

Energy consumption is by far the low hanging fruit on the sustainability tree.  Since, according to Energy Information Administration, a whopping 65% of the energy produced by mostly non-renewable sources is lost in conversion processes, it stands to reason to look closer at these conversions and develop more efficient technologies to get what we need.   Seen from this perspective a lot of the current market trends head in that direction.  The transition of incandescent lighting Read more [...]
HPB Congressional Caucus Issues Recommendations on Federal Buildings Acquisitions

HPB Congressional Caucus Issues Recommendations on Federal Buildings Acquisitions

Several days ago the High Performance Building Congressional Caucus issued a series of recommendations regarding Producing High-Performance Federal Buildings.  The first one on the list asks Congress to require that for all Acquisitions of Federal Buildings True Life-Cycle Analysis and Decision - Making be performed.  The second would require total building commissioning for all the federal Building Stock. When translated into legal language this would change the way business is conducted Read more [...]
